[Exclusive] The iPhone maker is ready to be the first client of TSMC's new Arizona fab. Finally, the iPhone will boast a processor that's Made in America
We need more and more good news like this. The CHIPS Act was/is a big deal. Please, Tim Apple - bring actual phone manufacturing over to the US, too. We can do this!
People seem to forget that the US defense agreements predate Taiwan having chips or even being a democracy. Arguably it started in 1945! Protecting Taiwan was never about chips!
Precisely. The US sent a carrier fleet through the Taiwan Strait in 1950, before semiconductors were invented. And again in 1996, well before TSMC was on anybody’s radar.
US support of Taiwan has always been about the freedom of Taiwan, not to protect supply chain. In fact, US helped build Taiwan’s supply chain *despite* the belligerence of the PRC
Incorrect on both counts. That's before US switched recognition of China from ROC to PRC. Facts. Unless you are saying US lies all the time and only switch to PRC to counter the Soviets. Either case the law literally recognize one China and Taiwan is part of China.
There will be a war over Taiwan and US will 100% lose over internal civil war if it gets involved.
He's not. US with Henry Kissinger when normalizing relations with China literally said that US policy is one China and Taiwan is part of China. It was the fundamental requirement for normalization of relations and switched recognition of China to PRC from ROC (Taiwan). Facts. So in all these years after to erode it is basically violating the original agreement. Not surprising to be honest but Taiwan is fundamental to Chinese interests and any change of that will result in war guaranteed. Including use of nukes.
This is a big deal. But be aware that the full supply chain is still international. After chip fabrication (in this article) comes packaging, almost none of which is done in the US.
Also, a yield “slightly lower” than the sister factory is quite impressive for early in the life of a new fab.
Out of India and China putin supportive countries (directly or indirectly) it's a good thing
This is just the CPU (albeit, it's an SOC so more than a CPU) out of Taiwan. Getting out of China is going to be slower, but 100% agree with you!

Fantastic!
Pretty good news
BS. No source. Just rando "journo". Facts is TSMC equipment in Arizona is 7nm only. And plant isn't ready at all.
Also if they are producing chips in US then no point for US to protect Taiwan. Lol. Taiwan isn't that dumb

I mean Tim’s stating facts

And in response Congress passed a law explicitly stating the US would aid in the defense of Taiwan. Do you even know US history?

Awesome scoop tx! I'm really glad to see leading edge coming out of TSMC and CHIPS succeeding
